Dragonwilds Gear Progression: Best Armor Sets Tier List
Complete RuneScape Dragonwilds gear progression guide: best armor sets by regional Power Level (2 to 9), 3-piece set bonuses, crafting stations, and raid drops.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds armour scales by regional Power Level from 2 to 9 (Queen Kuldra Dragon gear). Equipping 3 matching pieces unlocks class set bonuses (melee, ranged, or magic), while defence applies flat absolute mitigation per attack style.

Steel Full Set
1/3 - -33% block stamina cost
2/3 - +50% crit chance after blocking
3/3 - +25% damage to staggered targets
Shield and cape occupy separate slots and never count toward the set. Mixing classes throws the ladder away: two melee pieces and one magic hat gives you the 2/3 melee bonus and nothing from magic.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds splits armour along the same three-way combat triangle the rest of RuneScape uses, which means your weapon choice and your armour choice are the same decision. Every piece belongs to melee, ranged or magic, and the set bonus you unlock is worth more than the raw defence gap between tiers.

Armor Stats, Damage Mitigation & 3-Piece Bonuses
Defence is a flat number. When you hover a chest piece you see three values, one per attack style. The Reinforced body reads 15 melee defence, 9 ranged, 8 magic. There is no percentage anywhere in the system, and no armour stat is called “physical mitigation” or “thermal resistance”. Those are not Dragonwilds stats.
Power Level is the tier marker. Armour, and the weapons you pair with it, are sorted into Power Levels. The game itself ties Power Level to regions: Brynmoor’s gear ceiling is Power Level 2, and each later region raises the ceiling. Your inventory shows your current Power Level, and enemy markers shift colour once you are at or above what the area expects.
Three classes, one set bonus each. Melee armour gives the most melee defence, ranged armour the most ranged defence, magic armour the most magic defence. Within your class, the set bonus escalates:
| Pieces worn | Melee set | Ranged set | Magic set |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/3 | −33% block stamina cost | +40 stealth speed | −50% stamina regen delay |
| 2/3 | +50% crit chance after blocking | −33% ranged attack stamina cost | +10% magic attack speed |
| 3/3 | +25% damage to staggered targets | +25% weak point damage | +15% magic crit chance |
Read those as three playstyles, not three upgrade levels. The melee bonus rewards the block-parry loop - cheaper blocks, a crit window right after a successful block, then extra damage on the staggered target you just created. Ranged is about closing and opening: move quietly into position, shoot cheaper, hit weak points harder. Magic is uptime: get your stamina back faster, cast faster, and crit more often.
The count is three, not four. Head, chest and legs make the set. Your shield and cape occupy separate slots and never add to the count, so a Kiteshield does not improve your melee set bonus.
Complete Gear Progression Roadmap (Power Level 2-9)
Armour and weapons in Dragonwilds do not rely on character levels for equip requirements. Instead, gear progression is governed strictly by regional Power Level tiers:
| Power Level | Melee Line | Ranged Line | Magic Line | Region & Boss Gate | Primary Crafting Station |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power Level 2 | Reinforced | Leather | Apprentice | Brynmoor starter area | Crafting Table |
| Power Level 3 | Bronze | Hard Leather | Wizard | Ghornfell foothills | Armour Bench |
| Power Level 4 | Iron, Paladin’s | Studded Leather, Wild Archer’s | Dark Mage | Ghornfell & Dragonkin Vaults | Armour Bench |
| Power Level 5 | Steel, Fallen Hoplite’s | Green Dragonhide, Ranger | Splitbark | Fellhollow (Dragon Slayer quest & Wise Old Man) | Armour Bench & Blast Furnace (12 Granite) |
| Power Level 6 | Mithril, Black Knight | Blue Dragonhide, Shadow | Mystic | Dowdun Reach (Defeat Imaru) | Armour Bench |
| Power Level 7 | Adamant, Obsidian | Red Dragonhide, Kalphite Carapace | Infinity Robes | Umbral Sands (Defeat Black Knight Titan) | Armour Bench & Cores |
| Power Level 8 | Rune | Black Dragonhide | Ancestral Robes | Scorned Wilderness (Dragon Gate access) | Armour Bench |
| Power Level 9 | Dragon (Full Helm, Platebody, Platelegs) | Black Dragonhide (PL 8 Ceiling) | Ancestral Robes (PL 8 Ceiling) | Scorned Wilderness Raid (Defeat Queen Kuldra) | Queenslayer’s Reward Pack (Non-craftable) |
Early Game Armor (Power Level 2-4: Bronze & Iron)
Every class has a Power Level 2 answer made from animal bone, leather and thread. Nothing here is a side set - these are the default lines you replace as regions open.
| Power Level | Item | Slot | Melee def | Ranged def | Magic def | Crafted at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Reinforced Helmet | Head | 6 | 4 | 3 | Crafting Table |
| 2 | Reinforced Body | Chest | 15 | 9 | 8 | Crafting Table |
| 2 | Reinforced Legs | Legs | 9 | 6 | 5 | Crafting Table |
| 2 | Leather Cowl | Head | 4 | 5 | 4 | Crafting Table |
| 2 | Leather Body | Chest | 9 | 13 | 9 | Crafting Table |
| 2 | Leather Chaps | Legs | 6 | 8 | 6 | Crafting Table |
The Reinforced Body needs 8 animal bone and 8 leather; the helmet and legs use the same two materials in smaller amounts. Leather Body is the reverse trade - 9 melee defence but 13 ranged, the best ranged protection available at this tier.
The one number worth memorising. Melee and magic chest pieces share identical melee and magic defence at every tier, and ranged chests sit exactly two points lower than melee in their own lane. An Iron body gives 30 melee / 24 ranged / 23 magic, while a Studded Leather body gives 24 / 28 / 24. That makes ranged armour the generalist: weakest when you face the wrong enemy, least punished when you do.
Dragonkin Vault Sets & Crafting Station Upgrades
Ghornfell gives you Bronze then Iron. Fellhollow brings Steel at Power Level 5. Dowdun Reach brings Mithril at Power Level 6.
| Power Level | Melee | Ranged | Magic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Bronze | Hard leather | Wizard |
| 4 | Iron, Paladin’s | Studded leather, Wild Archer’s, Shadowscale | Dark mage |
| 5 | Steel, Fallen Hoplite’s, White | Shadowscale, Ranger, Green dragonhide | Splitbark |
| 6 | Mithril, Black Knight | Blue dragonhide | Infinity, Obsidian |
Bronze is a real craft, not a joke. Bronze Platebody needs 4 Bronze Bar, 4 Hard Leather and 2 Wool Thread, crafted at an Armour Bench. It gives 23 melee defence, comfortably above anything you can make before it.
Power Level 4 Iron is where Vault side sets appear. Exploring the Takla Kara and Kletterbuja Kara Dragonkin Vaults unlocks Paladin’s (melee) and Wild Archer’s (ranged). The Fellhollow Dragonkin Vault unlocks Fallen Hoplite’s (melee). These share the same stats as the default line at that tier - the reward is the Vault Shard and Vault Core materials you need for higher crafting, not a stat jump.
Death’s Exchange and Postie Pete are recipe sources. White, Ranger and Necromancer’s come from purchasing recipe vestiges from Death’s Exchange; Black Knight, Shadow, Zamorak and Obsidian come from Postie Pete in the Evil Emporium. Reading where a set comes from tells you whether you have the materials yet.
Mithril at Power Level 6 requires the Dowdun Reach route. Mithril Helmet unlocks by exploring the Dowdun Reach Dragonkin Vault, and its crafting leans on Cursed Leather, Mystic Cloth and Demonic Oil rather than plain bars.
Mid Game Armor (Power Level 5-6: Steel & Mithril)
Fellhollow is where the Armour Bench earns its keep. Every armour recipe you have used so far runs through that same facility - the bench, not an anvil. The Smithing Anvil that used to hold this role was removed in the 0.12.0 “Eye on Ashenfall” update, and its work was split across the Armour Bench, Blacksmith’s Bench, Fletching Bench and Mystic Forge. Fellhollow is what introduced the steel tier, and you will be crafting Steel to survive the wither-rot enemies that appear from this region onward.
| Power Level | Item | Melee def | Ranged def | Magic def | Key materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Steel Full Helm | 15 | 13 | 12 | 4 Steel Bar, 4 Draconic Leather, 1 Fine Cloth, 1 Sacred Oil, 2 Vault Shard |
| 5 | Steel Platebody | 38 | 32 | 30 | 6 Steel Bar, 6 Draconic Leather, 4 Fine Cloth, 3 Sacred Oil, 6 Vault Shard |
| 5 | Steel Platelegs | 23 | 19 | 18 | 4 Steel Bar, 4 Draconic Leather, 3 Fine Cloth, 2 Sacred Oil, 4 Vault Shard |
Your first Blast Furnace needs 12 Granite. Fellhollow’s Blast Furnace is the gate to steel, and once it is standing the limiting materials change: iron and coal become the constraint, not granite. Building more granite does not produce more steel bars.
From this region, new enemy variants apply poison, burn, shock and wither rot. That makes defensive potions brewed at the cauldron standard equipment rather than optional, and durability matters more than it did in the starter regions - Magical Mending at Artisan 56 turns repairs from a chore into a spell.
Green dragonhide sits at the same Power Level as Steel. If you fight ranged, you are not behind by choosing Green Dragonhide over Steel; you trade the melee line for 36 ranged defence on the body, which is higher than any melee chest at this tier.
End Game Armor (Power Level 7-8: Adamant & Rune)
Umbral Sands is the largest region in the game and the one that raises your ceiling to Power Level 7. The Kalphite Queen and Fuzan the Fire Dragon are both here.
| Power Level | Melee | Ranged | Magic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Adamant | Red dragonhide | Infinity Robes |
The Adamant Platebody gives 45 melee defence against 39 ranged and 38 magic - the first chest piece in the game where the melee-versus-magic symmetry breaks, and the reason melee becomes the clear choice for the region boss.
Umbral Sands adds real hazards. Scorch and quicksand are named environmental dangers here, and the region’s own progression route runs through the Fight Cave (wave-based, ending with Fuzan, with a cape reward) and the Nightmare Crucible, which is opened with Engrams and is the only source of Power Level 7 Cores.
Power Level also gates weapons, not just armour. Power Level 5 bows exist in Fellhollow. If you are waiting on a specific Power Level weapon, check which region introduced that number before you plan a farming route.
Power Level 9 Dragon Gear (Queen Kuldra Raid Drops)
The Scorned Wilderness is the endgame region and it breaks the biome format entirely. It strings together extraction points, elemental anima systems, combat chambers, traversal hazards and puzzles rather than a single route to an arena. Runite and Luminite are found here too, so you do not need a finished Runite loadout before entering - the area hands you some of that upgrade on the way through.
Queen Kuldra, the five-headed Dragon Queen, drops the Power Level 9 Dragon set. None of it is craftable.
| Loot | Slot | Class | Melee / Ranged / Magic def | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Full Helm | Head | Melee | 27 / 25 / 24 | Plumed design; standard of the pair |
| Dragon Med Helm | Head | Melee | 27 / 25 / 24 | Cosmetic alternative, identical stats |
| Dragon Platebody | Chest | Melee | 68 / 62 / 60 | The single best chest piece in the game |
| Dragon Platelegs | Legs | Melee | 41 / 37 / 36 | Completes the 3-piece set |
| Dragon Kiteshield | Shield | - | - | 79 block; part of the first-clear guarantee |
| Dragonslayer’s Cape | Back | - | - | Awarded with the first clear |
| Dragon Scimitar | Weapon | Melee | - | Pairs with the Kiteshield for the block-counter loop |
| Dragon Crossbow | Weapon | Ranged | - | Compare against your Rune Crossbow before retiring it |
| Kuldra’s Wrath | Weapon | Magic | - | Covers the magic side of the same loot pool |
The chest piece is where the value sits. A Dragon Platebody at 68 melee defence is 8 points above the best craftable Rune Platebody and 15 above Adamant, which is the gap that separates farming Kuldra from farming the Wilderness. The helm and legs are proportionally smaller upgrades, so a player partway through the set is still meaningfully better off finishing the plate first.
None of it degrades. Dragon armour carries passive full durability, so a completed set never needs repair.
Your first clear is not a full set. The Kiteshield and a cape come first, and repeat clears fill in the rest. Because the helm comes in two cosmetic versions, you may never need to farm the Med Helm at all.
After every repeat you emerge back inside the Wilderness, not outside the arena. Plan your return supplies and travel points before you start a clear, because you are not walking back to a campfire after the fight.
If your party covers melee, keep the other drops in mind. Dragon Crossbow and Kuldra’s Wrath come from the same table, and Dragonwilds encourages swapping combat styles between encounters rather than committing to whichever piece has the biggest number. Build toward the Scorned Wilderness with at least Adamant-tier gear; Rune, Black Dragonhide and Ancestral Robes are the natural upgrade path into it.
Best Armor Crafting Priority & Upgrade Rules
- Craft the chest piece first. It carries the largest share of your defensive rating and it is what raises your Power Level fastest. Helmet and legs are a comfort upgrade; the chest is the progression piece.
- Match armour to how you fight, not to what has the biggest number. A Power Level 5 ranged chest beats a Power Level 5 melee chest by a wide margin against ranged enemies. The tier label tells you the region, not the answer.
- Do not mix classes casually. Three pieces of one class is the whole bonus ladder. Two-and-one costs you the 3/3 effect entirely, and the 3/3 effects are the strongest lines in the table.
- Treat durability as part of the cost. Magical Mending at Artisan 56 removes most of the repair burden. Below that, budget for Wardstones from the Rune Altar and repairs at your stations.
- Read the region, not a tier chart. The reliable progression signal in Dragonwilds is which region has opened and which enemies have appeared. Enemy diamonds turning yellow or green is the game’s own confirmation that your Power Level matches the area.
Common Gear Progression Traps to Avoid
- Chasing a “percentage mitigation” number that does not exist. Defence is absolute. Any guide quoting percentage mitigation curves for steel armour is confusing Dragonwilds with other survival games.
- Assuming a four-piece set. It is three. Counting your shield and cape toward the bonus leads to wrong upgrade decisions.
- Treating smithing as a skill you level. There is no Smithing skill. Metalworking is Artisan progression - you level it by crafting, and the Anvil is a station, not a skill gate.
- Skipping the Blast Furnace’s 12 Granite. It is the single most common reason a player stalls before steel.
- Wearing heavy early armour into Umbral Sands. Scorch and quicksand punish the unprepared long before a boss does.
FAQ
What is the gear progression order in Dragonwilds?
Gear progression strictly follows regional Power Level tiers: Reinforced (PL 2, Brynmoor), Bronze and Iron (PL 3-4, Ghornfell), Steel (PL 5, Fellhollow), Mithril (PL 6, Dowdun Reach), Adamant (PL 7, Umbral Sands), Rune (PL 8, Scorned Wilderness), and Dragon gear (PL 9, Queen Kuldra raid).
How many pieces do I need for the armour set bonus in Dragonwilds?
Three. The set bonus counts your helmet, chest piece and leg piece only. Your shield and cape sit in their own slots and never contribute to the count, so a full melee set is helm, platebody and platelegs plus an optional shield and cape.
What is the Power Level 2 armour in RuneScape: Dragonwilds?
Power Level 2 is the starting armour line, split across the three classes. Melee starts with Reinforced (helmet, body, legs, made from animal bone and leather). Ranged starts with Leather cowl, body and chaps. Magic starts at the same Power Level 2 with Wizard gear. Defence is a flat number: the Reinforced body gives 15 melee defence against 9 ranged and 8 magic.
Does mixing armour pieces work in Dragonwilds?
You can wear any combination, but the set bonus only counts pieces of one class. Two melee pieces and one magic hat gives you the 2/3 melee bonus and nothing from magic - the magic piece needs to be part of a magic set you are actually wearing. Mixed sets usually lose more damage and stamina economy than the raw defence difference suggests.
What is the best armour in RuneScape: Dragonwilds 1.0?
The Power Level 9 Dragon gear from Queen Kuldra in the Scorned Wilderness is the highest tier in the game, and none of it is craftable. The pieces are not uniform: the Dragon Platebody gives 68 melee, 62 ranged and 60 magic defence, while the Full Helm gives 27 / 25 / 24 and the Platelegs 41 / 37 / 36. The plate is the upgrade that matters. You get the gear by handing Kuldra's Head to Commander Zilyana for a Queenslayer's Reward Pack, and each pack yields exactly one item from a published table.
Can I skip to the highest Power Level armour?
No. Crafting each tier requires the metal from the region before it - Bronze and Iron come from Ghornfell, Steel from Fellhollow, Mithril from Dowdun Reach, Adamant from Umbral Sands, and Runite from the Scorned Wilderness. Power Level is a gear requirement, not a separate skill you level.
